Scheltema Complex is the place to be for modern art in Leiden. Scheltema connects the musicians, artists and scientists with the visitors and also provides for a inspiring working environment used by starting or experimental artists and groups. The complex is located in the old blanket factory which was founded in 1817 but went bankrupt in 1958. After a vacancy of almost 50 years, the building has been restored amazingly while keeping its authenticity. The five Scheltema partners who combine their forces within the complex are the Municipal Museum de Lakenhal, Leiden University, De VeenFabriek, Scheltema Horeca and the Leiden Municipality. Together they organize concerts, exhibitions, lecturers, classes, theater plays, festivals and seminars for all ages. As a partner within the Scheltema Complex, Restaurant Scheltema is one of the better restaurants in Leiden. The original and extensive menu varies almost weekly! The restaurant is located in the old factory kettle house which gives the place a robust authentic look combined with comfortable sofas and a classy decoration. During the summer the comforting and serene garden is open for lunch and drinks. Besides the exploitation of the restaurant Scheltema Horeca also caters within the building for the partners and external clients, for example oration dinners, Leiden Jazz and the Leiden Film Festival. External interested parties can rent (a part of) the complex with a maximum of 650 people for parties, private dinners, weddings or meetings.
